The Best Magicians in the World (with videos)

Who are the most famous magicians in the world? And who holds the title of the best magician in the world? While “best” is subjective, there’s no doubt that David Copperfield stands out as the most successful magician globally. Still amazing audiences in Las Vegas, he’s been at the pinnacle of magic since the 70s with a current net worth of $1 billion!

Here’s a list of some of the most exciting and groundbreaking magicians who have transformed modern magic. You’ll likely recognise a few names, and you might discover some new ones, too.

I’m Tom Weil, a magician and mind reader with nearly 20 years of professional experience. Throughout my career, I’ve seen many magicians emerge and revolutionise the field (although many of which may never reach the public eye).

History has seen its fair share of famous magicians. While they might not be as numerous as famous actors, singers, or comedians, there are hundreds of magicians who have left an indelible mark on the art of magic and even within popular culture. When a magician rises to fame, they often inspire countless others who aspire to follow in their footsteps.

Watching a top magician, you can often see the influence of their predecessors. Even the greatest magicians were shaped by those who came before them.

We all stand on the shoulders of giants!

Harry Houdini

Harry Houdini is arguably the most famous magician in history. Born in 1874, Houdini gained worldwide fame for his incredible escape acts. He could free himself from handcuffs, straitjackets, and even locked containers submerged underwater. His most famous escape, the Chinese Water Torture Cell, involved escaping from a tank of water while hanging upside down with his feet shackled.

A true showman, Houdini’s death-defying performances and his dedication to exposing fraudulent spiritualists solidified his legacy as a master of escape and illusion.

David Copperfield

David Copperfield is a modern-day magician whose career has spanned over four decades. He is renowned for his grand illusions, such as making the Statue of Liberty disappear, walking through the Great Wall of China, and escaping from Alcatraz.

Copperfield’s charisma and innovative approach to magic have earned him 21 Emmy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

His showmanship and ability to blend storytelling with magic have set new standards in the world of illusion.

I saw Copperfield’s show live when I was in Las Vegas on my honeymoon. One of his most impressive traits is that he’s an incredibly hard worker, smashing out 16 shows a week!

Ultimately that’s how you get to be able to afford your own private island.

Penn & Teller

Penn & Teller have been a staple in the world of magic for over 40 years.

Known for their distinctive act where Penn speaks and Teller remains silent, the duo has a unique blend of comedy, skepticism, and illusion.

They are famous for revealing the secrets behind some of their tricks, adding an educational element to their performances.

Their long-running show in Las Vegas and their television series “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” have solidified their reputation as innovative and influential magicians.

The smart part of this show is that – unlike the ‘Got Talent’ shows they encourage on the best-of-the-best magicians from around the world due to the fact that, from a magician’s point of view, the prize is being on the show itself. If you’re good enough to get on, you guarantee a great response from the hosts (e.g. Penn & Teller) and a video that will get you a few hundred-thousands of views on Youtube. The trophy is just a bonus.

Dynamo

Dynamo, born Steven Frayne, is a British magician who gained fame through his television series “Dynamo: Magician Impossible”.

His street magic and large-scale illusions, such as walking on water across the River Thames, have captivated audiences worldwide. Dynamo’s modern and edgy style, combined with his personable approach, has made him a standout figure in contemporary magic.

Steven used to live with a friend of mine in London many years ago (before he became internationally famous) and our paths would occasionally cross at magical social events in London. His success is clearly driven by a strong work ethic and incredible skill with playing cards.

David Blaine

David Blaine revolutionized the world of magic with his endurance stunts and street magic.

His feats, such as being buried alive, frozen in ice, and standing on a pillar for days, have pushed the boundaries of physical and mental endurance. Blaine’s intimate and raw style of performing magic on the streets, directly in front of spectators, brought a new level of realism and excitement to the art form.

His ability to create suspense and engage audiences has made him one of the most influential magicians of his time.

He is – also – the main reason I got into magic. His TV shows popularised close-up magic and drove me to want to know more about the artform.

Derren Brown

Derren Brown is a British mentalist and illusionist known for his mind-reading and psychological manipulation techniques.

His television specials and stage shows often involve a mix of “magic, suggestion, psychology, and misdirection”.

Brown’s ability to predict and influence human behavior has earned him critical acclaim and a loyal following (including me!).

His intellectual approach to his entertainment style and his exploration of the human mind set him apart from traditional magicians.

A lot of people don’t know that he was originally a fantastic card magician, but when a production company were looking for a mentalist to front a new show on Channel 4 (in the UK), a magician called Jerry Sadowitz put Derren’s name forward and the rest, as they say, is history.

Derren, in my mind, is one of the greatest performers of all time, and when you have an understanding of how his unique style of mentalism works, it only goes to elevate your appreciation of his incredible skills.

Siegfried and Roy

The duo of Siegfried and Roy is best known for their spectacular shows in Las Vegas, which featured white lions and tigers.

Their blend of magic and exotic animals was a real hit with audiences.

Siegfried and Roy’s mastery of illusion and their deep connection with their animals made them one of the most successful magic acts in history.

Despite the tragic end to their performing careers following Roy’s severe injury in 2003, their legacy in magic remains strong.

And now...magicians you've probably never heard of

Whilst there are plenty of famous magicians on TV and in the media, there are a lot that you would probably never hear about unless you’re a magician. Here are a few that I would deme to be some of the best in the world.

Juan Tamariz

Juan Tamariz is a Spanish magician renowned for his incredible card magic and his deeply engaging performances.

With a career spanning several decades, Tamariz has become a legend in the magic community.

His eccentric and whimsical style puts audiences at ease, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the magical experience.

Tamariz’s contributions to magic literature, including his influential books on card magic and theory, have educated and inspired countless magicians around the world.

His dedication to the craft and his innovative techniques make him a true master of magic.

Dani DaOrtiz

Dani DaOrtiz is another Spanish magician who has taken the world by storm with his mind-blowing card tricks and charismatic performances.

Known for his relaxed and improvisational style, DaOrtiz creates a sense of spontaneity that leaves audiences astonished.

His ability to connect with spectators on a personal level, combined with his expert sleight of hand, has made him one of the most respected figures in modern magic.

DaOrtiz’s performances on shows like “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” have showcased his unique approach to magic, solidifying his place among the greats.

He also has a unique ability to use such strong psychological techniques to enhance his sleight of hand, that he fools the heck out magicians all the time!

Fay Presto

Female London magician Fay Presto is one of the most influential people on this list that you’ve probably never heard of.

Fay is said to have created the genre of close-up magic, performing in restaurants, clubs bars and weddings.

She is known for her “bottle through the table” trick, which was ranked as the 37th greatest magic trick of all time by Channel 4’s 50 Greatest Magic Tricks.

She has been a huge part of the Magic Circle (the world most exclusive magic club) and gave me some fantastic and highly useful advice when I started performing magic in the
